Like a Tough Princess

Enough fantastic things cannot be said about Kate Wax.

Smooth, sophisticated and in total control, Kate wax is a beguiling artist, phenomenal producer and prominent DJ. She does it all herself with the help of an dutiful fleet of electronic instruments including a Mac G4 laptop, a Electribe Mx1, 106 Junod, Jomox, and MAQ 16.

Kate’s first self-written and produced album, Reflections of the Dark Heat was released on Mental Groove records in June. The 13 track CD is brilliant – and an obvious result of Kate’s approach to her art. The album is a tour of Kate's internal universe, communicated to us through a series of aural landscapes reflecting both the light and dark of her existence. Every song is a rich blend of influences and styles: Bauhaus, Prince, PJ Harvey, Cabaret Voltaire, Joy Division and Cologne techno, 80’s beats, industrial grind, and analogue drum tracks; all shaped by Kate’s formally trained crystal-clear voice.

She relates intimately with her electronic instruments, and has spent countless hours with each to learn its intricacies. She believes you should learn how to work the machines on yr own because "If nobody shows you, you will find your own tricks". Like Berlin-based Rhythm King and Her Friends, Kate hopes more and more women will become confident about software/machines/cables and electronic stuff and begin using the new technologies to make music. Kate is all about women doing it on their own; as she told one interviewer "Love men, but leave them outside of your studio."

Rebel Doll

Daring, intelligent, sophisticated...Kate Wax is a one-woman powerhouse from Geneva Switzerland.

She started fiddling with the electronics back in art school, where she first met her friend Apple, and has never looked back. Her approach is relentlessly DIY; she produces all of her own tracks, with a beautiful lo-fi result.

Ms. Wax creates an intoxicating galaxy of harmonies where pulsing hip-hop rhythms combine with her sultry voice talking, rapping or singing over the tracks. And people go crazy for it! They dance, scream, love... and with ignorant assumption frequently ask, "Who did the music?"

Kate recently provided the vocals on "Let Your Mind Be Your Bed" & "Romantique" on Devin Dazzle & The Neon Fever by Felix Da Housecat. Her upcoming album "Pools & Dogs" will be released in March 2005 on Mental Groove Records.
