Cherchez La Femme

Musician. Activist. Teacher. Icon.

Sarah Dougher is our kind of lady. A true renaissance woman, exploding with talents.

She is a prolific musician/songwriter (8 albums to date – including collaborations with Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker and sts, drummer for The Haggard). She helped organize Ladyfest 2000 and has worked with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls.

Currently, she teaches a course in Women in Rock at Portland State University (using her PhD in Comparative Literature) and is the News Editor for Oregon's Gay & Lesbian newspaper, Just Out. This summer, she started Cherchez La Femme Records and released her album Harpers Arrow - after it's orginal release on Mr. Lady Records was cancelled for obvious reasons.

Harper’s Arrow was three years in the making and well worth the wait. The album is an amazing collection of 16 songs inspired by Homer’s Odyssey and the impact of war. Sarah’s raw, doleful vocals, are perfectly offset with the minimal instrumentation of Seth Lorinczi, Joh Nikki, Julianna Bright, Kevin Robinson, Anita Robinson and Tim Green.

Sarah is also working with a great group of artists on a forthcoming compilation CD called Safe Haven, to benefit Portland’s Sexual Minority Youth Recreation Center (SMYRC). The compilation will include songs from the Decemberists, the Indigo Girls, Katastrophe and Erase Errata’s Sara Jaffe. We will keep you posted on the release date.
