Ooh
Baby!
The Detroit Cobras dwell somewhere between Motown
and Detroit Rock City.
The Detroit Cobras are Rachel Nagy (vox) and
Mary Ramirez (guitar) with Steve Nawara (lead guitar), Joe Mazzola
(bass), Kenny Tudrick (drums), Greg Cartwright (guitar) and Eddie
Harsch (basss, keys and vocals) who is also the keyboardist for
The Black Crowes!
Their latest release Baby ups the ante on their
previous efforts Mink Rat or Rabbit
and Love, Life and Leaving. On
Baby, the band’s
third full length release, the ladies take their talent for reworking
obscure R&B tunes into fierce garage-rock to new heights, injecting
the old tales of loving, leaving, sex and betrayal with bravado
and bad-girl cockiness. Baby is like a dark, smoky Detroit bar
where garage and R&B hook up for a hot bathroom make out session.
The CD is a whopping 20 tracks – which includes the ‘Seven
Easy Pieces’ EP originally released in 2003 on rough Trade
and previously only available as an import. The CD also contains
a video for the song “Cha Cha Twist”.
The Detroit Cobras
are currently doing a concert series in Chicago called Sound check;
a concert series to benefit Gary Schepers. If you are in the area,
you should get out and support a good cause and get yr rock on.
