The New Modern

They exude an inimitable gritty glamour and are non-stop, kind of like their native city of Los Angeles. The Sharp Ease -- Dana Barenfeld (bass), Anika Stephen (sax), Christene Kings(drums), Paloma Par-frey (vocals) and Aaron Freschia (guitar) -- are pure energy.

Dana and Paloma started the Sharp Ease soon after befriending each other in 2001. In their early formation, they exploded onto the music scene: The Sharp Ease released two singles - 'T-Spin' on Soft Spot Records and 'Advantage' on Softmachine Records, and a split single with Hot N Heavy on Spitshine Records. They are featured on the compilation LA Bands 2004 released on Deathbombarc Records, were nominated for best New Artist in 2003 by the LA Weekly Music Awards, plus, they have played shows with such big names as The B52s, Peaches, and The Gossip.

Their music is part art-punk, part rock n roll and part new 80s style. Recorded and mixed by Rod Cervera (Weezer, Young People, The Rentals), their debut full-length, Going Modern, was released in February 2005. The CD features 12 explosive tracks that will keep you listening over and over again - perhaps trying in vain to compare their sound to someone else. Paloma's voice and sassy attitude will roust your curiosity, too. Look for more buzz about The Sharp Ease this spring. They have a new EP coming out on vinyl in April on Olfactory and they will also appear in the upcoming issue of Venus magazine.
